Thanks. I read it both times! I admit I skimmed the second draft to see what was added, and I might be wrong, but I think you added the exact part I thought was missing from version 1, which was mostly that Can't You Hear Me Knocking is the best bit of lead guitar work ever (I may have added that conclusion to your intent). I love lead guitar that is jammed, captures a vibe in the session that the players are so into that they can't stop playing. Whoever made the decision to a. leave the tapes running and b. stick it on the album, needs a place in the hall of fame. The other choices you highlighted were interesting. I love the Eliminator album and listened to it all the time, even though it was deeply uncool for a punk/goth of my standing in society. But that isn't one of the tracks that stood out for me, don't know why. I viewed it as a filler track, but going back to it, I get what you are saying. Steely Dan? Not a track I knew. The solo was the best part, which got me to thinking about solos I don't like, namely all the ones where the song seems only to serve as a necessary requirement to justify some cool guitar playing. Stand up Eddie Van Halen. Quite a lot of Knopfler. Some where you have to put up with the song in order to enjoy the cool guitar bit, like picking meat out of a bad stew. Anyway, great triptych of writing about the best thing you can do with a plank of wood and six wires.

So so much to respond to here, but I have two things:

Taylor’s solo on “Winter” is magnificent; and

What I miss about electric guitar in general is- it hasn’t gone away, not really, people still play them… but no one now has a recognizable sound. Once upon a time, you could put on a blindfold and tell a Santana solo from a Ronson solo from a Page solo from a Gallagher solo from a Buck Dharma solo and so on. These days, they all still solo some but none of them have a recognizable, distinct sound of their own.
